Individual rivets are knocked out; a tedious, labor intensive job. It was this leaf that landed
on the Jackson in 2013 after being accidently lowered onto the ship by an intoxicated bridge operator.

Jefferson Ave bridge
The Jefferson Avenue bridge was built in 1922 by the Strobel Steel Construction Company of Chicago.
"This bridge is the only surviving example of a pony truss bascule bridge in the entire state of Michigan,"
proclaims a web site about this historic span.

John G. Munson
Ahead in the river is the self-unloader John G. Munson, unloading at a stone dock in the Rouge.
Like the Jackson, the Munson is in its final year as a steamer.

Looking back as the Jackson approaches the mouth of the Rouge River.
The original river mouth is on our left on the way out of the river.

Rouge River
The original mouth of the Rouge River was too shallow and twisted to make navigation practical
so a short cut was dug connecting the Rouge to the Detroit River on the south side of what is now Zug Island.

My favorite spans on the Rouge are the pipeline trestles and small bascule bridge for a steel mill's railroad.
