The 730-foot bulk carrier Algocape is a frequent visitor
to Thunder Bay. Golden streams of grain bound for ports on
the upper St. Lawrence River fill the ship's cargo hold on this summer afternoon.

The Pineglen is one of the largest Canadian bulk carriers
on the Great Lakes and currently holds a number of grain cargo
records. In 2002 the vessel was purchased by Canada Steamship Lines.

The Joseph H. Frantz, built in 1925, is one of the oldest
bulk carriers operating on the Great Lakes, and only recently
began loading grain, under charter to Great Lakes Associates
from Ogelbay Norton Marine.

A throwback to the old days of telescoping hatch covers and
canvas tarpaulins, the barge Sarah Spencer has escaped the ship
breakers yards for many more years than most of its contemporaries.

Duluth's Cargill elevator is the last major elevator built in the
Twin Ports. Cargill first began operation in the port in Superior in 1893.
The Duluth facility is primarily noted for loading salt water vessels.

The Canadian Miner load spring wheat at Superior's Cenex-Harvest States
grain elevator. The Miner normally works grain and iron ore along the
St. Lawrence Seaway.
