The Inland Mariners: Special / Pineglen

The Pineglen made its first trip of the season to the Port of Superior on Sunday, July 6, 2003. The Pineglen is assisted to its berth at Cenex-Harvest States by the tug Kentucky.


The Pineglen set and still holds the record for the largest grain cargo on the Great Lakes. In 1996 the Pineglen, then known as the Paterson, loaded 28,942 metric tons of soybeans in Superior.

The Pineglen is owned and operated by Canada Steamship Lines. The vessel was launched at Collingwood, Ontario in 1985, and is the last bulk carrier to be built on the Great Lakes.

Wheat pouring into the cargo holds on the Pineglen sparkles brilliantly in the afternoon sunlight. The Pineglen is expected to load over 28,000 metric tons for Bunge Grain in Quebec City.


Captain John Manner, M/V Pineglen

Captain John Manner began his Great Lakes sailing career in 1962 for Westdale Shipping aboard the steamer Parkdale. Captain Manner joined Canada Steamship Lines on July 2, 1976.
