Captain Gerry Greig

Captain Gerry Greig of the motor vessel Canadian Miner. Gerry began his sailing career with Upper Lakes Shipping in 1964 as a deckhand aboard the 1899 vintage steamer Maunaloa II.

Gerry has been the permanant captain on the Canadian Miner since 1995.


The Canadian Miner was acquired by Upper Lakes Shipping in 1994 from Great Lakes Bulk Carriers. The Miner was built in 1966 for Halco and sailed originally as the Maplecliffe Hall.

This is the second trip to Superior this season for the Canadian Miner. The grain loaded on this trip is destined for Port Cartier, on the upper
St. Lawrence River.


The Canadian Miner spends about two days (16 hours) loading.

The Canadian Miner is powered by four diesel engines. The engines were originally designed for use in submarines but adapt well to this use.
