The Inland Mariners: Special / Algocape

Captain Craig Ball at the helm of the motor vessel Algocape. The Algocape was built by Davie Shipbuilding, Ltd. at Lauzon, Quebec in 1966. The vessel entered service on the lakes as the Richeleiu in 1967 under the flag of Canada Steamship Lines.

The Richeleiu was acquired by Algoma Central Marine in 1994 and was renamed the Algocape, the second vessel to carry this name on the lakes.

The usual trade route for the Algocape is to load grain at Thunder Bay, Ontario to ports on the upper St. Lawrence such as Port Cartier, where this cargo is destined, and Baie Comeau.

The Algocape is seen here taking a partial load at the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool No. 7 before shifting to another elevator in the port of Thunder Bay to complete loading.

AB

Most Canadian vessels on the Great Lakes carry a crew roster of around 22. Lloyd Pink, Able-Bodied Seaman (AB), who began sailing at the age of 19, takes soundings of the ballast tanks during loading.
On the dock, First Officer Andrew Kleiser checked the draft at the stern of the Algocape to keep the vessel trim during loading.
